TMD disorders are multifactorial in nature
Possible causes for TMD:
Injury to the joint, jaw or muscles of head and neck from whiplash or a heavy blow
- Clenching or grinding of teeth
- Stress
- Arthritis in TMJ
Common Symptoms :
- Limited range of motion in the jaw
- Jaw gets stuck in open or closed mouth position
- migraines and headaches
- Bite feels uncomfortable as if teeth aren’t fitting well together
- Pain in jaw joint, face and or ear
Treatment options:
Medications – certain medications such as anti-inflammatory or muscle relaxers and or anti-anxiety medication may be suggested depending on the extent of TMD Treament progression.
Nightguard – A hard/ soft nightgaurd may be suggested if you are grinding or clenching your teeth at night. A digital scan will be taken of your upper, lower teeth to fabricate a nightguard that is specifically designed for you. Nightguards decrease the effects of grinding or clenching by ensuring that your teeth aren’t touching thus taking the pressure off of the joint.
