dental sealent

When is the best time to get dental sealants?

Permanent first molars erupt for a child around 6 to 7 years of age. Second molars erupt between 11 to 14 years. In order to protect permanent molars from caries it is recommended for children to receive  sealants when first molars begin to come in. Sealants can also be beneficial for adults with good oral hygiene.

dental sealent Procedure

The application of dental sealant happens after the grooves in the teeth are thoroughly cleaned. Then special solutions are applied to help prepare the surface of the teeth for sealant placement. The solution helps create a strong bond between the sealant and tooth structure. Once the solution dries , the dental sealent is painted on the teeth, helping seal the depressions and grooves. The sealant is hardened with a special curing light. Once the dental sealent is cured, your child can resume normal eating habits.

Maintenance of dental sealants

Dental sealants are the most successful when combined with good oral habits. It should be noted that if good oral home care is not established even the teeth with dental sealants can become prone to decay. It is recommended to have regular flossing, brushing habits along with a healthy and balanced diet. With proper care and regular 6 month recall visits, dental sealants will last for years.
