Dental anxiety impacts more than 50 % of adults and children and results in skipping dental appointments. However, ignoring dental problems only causes them to increase in severity. Minimal Sedation
Nitrous oxide or laughing gas
Nitrous oxide or laughing gas is an analgesic ( pain reliever) and induces euphoric effects when inhaled through the nose. Laughing gas is an excellent option for patients that experience mild to moderate anxiety. This sedative is given through a mask that goes over the nose. We will closely monitor the dosage and titrate it according to your weight. Throughout the procedure we will ensure that you are comfortable, calm and pain free.
During inhalation of nitrous oxide, you may feel happy and you may feel some tingling sensation. This is very normal. The benefit of nitrous is that it is fast and short lived. The effects of nitrous will start wearing off in about 5 minutes once the nose mask is removed. It is safe to drive home after minimal sedation with nitrous as you will not feel sleepy or sedated after treatment.
ORAL CONSCIOUS SEDATION DENTISTRY IN WOODBRIDGE
If you are going to have surgical procedures done, such as extractions or implant placement, and you are nervous about the dental visit. Oral conscious sedation dentistry may be the best option for you. This sedation dentistry method is taken in pill form an approximately hour before your treatment.
After an hour after taking the recommended pill you will start to feel sleepy, or groggy. The best part about this sedation method is that you may fall asleep during your treatment and you will not remember most of your procedure. No pain or discomfort will be felt during the treatment.
Oral sedation may last up to 4-8 hours and in some cases longer. It is recommended that arrangements for a ride be made as you will NOT be able to DRIVE yourself home right after treatment. Please make appropriate travel arrangements.
