Temporomandibular disorders is a broad term used for neuromuscular and musculoskeletal conditions that involve the temporomandibular joint, and the masticatory muscles. The classic presentation of TMD involves pain in neck, face, decrease in motion of the jaw joint, headache and ear pain.

TMD disorders are multifactorial in nature

Temporomandibular joint is lined with fibrocartilage and when there are derangements in the TMJ such as unusual movement of the mandibular condyle in the glenoid fossa symptoms may occur.

Possible causes for TMD:

Injury to the joint, jaw or muscles of head and neck from whiplash or a heavy blow

  • Clenching or grinding of teeth
  • Stress
  • Arthritis in TMJ

Common Symptoms :

  • Limited range of motion in the jaw
  • Jaw gets stuck in open or closed mouth position
  • migraines and headaches
  • Bite feels uncomfortable as if teeth aren’t fitting well together
  • Pain in jaw joint, face and or ear

Treatment options:

Medications – certain medications such as  anti-inflammatory or muscle relaxers  and or anti-anxiety medication may be suggested depending on the extent of TMD Treament progression.

Nightguard –  A hard/ soft nightgaurd may be suggested if you are grinding or clenching your teeth at night. A digital scan will be taken of your upper, lower teeth to fabricate a nightguard that is specifically designed for you. Nightguards decrease the effects of grinding or clenching by ensuring that your teeth aren’t touching thus taking the pressure off of the joint.
